You're exhausted. You've been looking forward to sleep all day. You turn off the light, close your eyes, and then… your brain decides it's the perfect time to replay every awkward conversation you've had since 2014.
Sound familiar? Yeah, us too. Pretty much everyone goes through this. We scoured the internet for some really simple things that actually seem to help.
7 Things Worth Trying
1. Cognitive shuffling
Pick a random word like "mango" and for each letter, picture a few totally unrelated images before moving on. It sounds weird but it actually works. Your brain gets just enough to chew on that it stops looping. Lots of people say this is the one that finally did it for them.
2. Brain dump before bed
Grab a notebook and just... get it all out. Worries, tomorrow's to-do list, random thoughts. There's something about physically writing it down that tells your brain it's safe to let go.
3. Schedule your worrying (seriously)
Give yourself 10-15 minutes earlier in the day to actually sit with your stress. Then when it shows up at 11pm, you've got a real answer: "I already did that." Sounds too easy, but a lot of people find it surprisingly effective.
4. 4-7-8 breathing
Inhale 4 seconds, hold for 7, exhale for 8. That's it. Try it a few times and you'll feel your whole body start to slow down.
5. Tense and release your muscles
Starting at your toes, squeeze tight for a few seconds then let go. Work your way up. By the time you reach your shoulders, you're usually way more relaxed than when you started.
6. Put the phone down 30 min before bed
We know, we know. But the blue light genuinely messes with your sleep hormones. Even just 30 minutes without a screen before bed makes a difference. Find something boring to do instead — that's kind of the point.
7. Get out of bed if you're stuck
Counterintuitive, but if you've been lying there for 20+ minutes getting increasingly frustrated, just get up. Go do something quiet and low-key until you feel sleepy for real, then try again.
