One of the most common questions we get asked is if there’s a difference between cannabidiol (CBD) and hemp products. More recently, we’ve been asked about hemp gummies vs. CBD gummies.
In general, hemp gummies and CBD gummies are the same thing. It’s simply two different names for the same product. However, there’s a lot of confusion around this topic because of how hemp-derived CBD products are labeled.
To clear up any confusion surrounding hemp gummies and CBD gummies, we break down the cause of this confusion, explain the difference between hemp seed and hemp products, and provide helpful tips for ensuring your hemp product is legit.
Hemp Gummies vs. CBD Gummies
First things first—what’s the difference between hemp and CBD? Hemp simply refers to the varieties of the cannabis C. Sativa plants that contain less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Hemp plants produce three types of compounds: cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids.
CBD is a specific cannabinoid produced by hemp plants. When consumed, CBD interacts with your body’s endocannabinoid system, providing potential benefits such as reduced mild anxiety, relief from everyday aches and pains, and improved sleep.
CBD gummies fall under the category of edibles. Many, if not most, big CBD companies label their CBD gummies as hemp gummies for marketing purposes. They’re sweet (or sour), chewy candies infused with CBD and often other hemp compounds. Similar to other CBD products, like CBD oils and tinctures, gummies can be found in three forms (full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate). They usually come in a multipack and can have varying strengths. The label will likely show how many milligrams of CBD are in the entire container as well as how many mg of CBD per gummy.
Hemp Seed Gummies vs. Hemp Gummies
Technically speaking, there’s no difference when talking about hemp gummies vs. CBD gummies. However, there are products on the market that sound similar but are in fact something completely different. Hemp seed gummies and hemp seed oil are sometimes inaccurately labeled as hemp gummies and hemp oil.
Hemp seed gummies are made from hemp seed oil. Hemp seed oil comes from cold-pressing the seeds of the hemp plant and has no more than trace amounts of CBD and no THC. Instead, hemp seed products contain polyunsaturated fatty acids such as omega-3 and omega-6, vitamins, and minerals. So while these products have their own unique potential health benefits, they do not contain any CBD, other cannabinoids, terpenes, or flavonoids.
Hemp seed products may:
-
Promote cardiovascular health by improving total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides
-
Improve skin conditions
-
Relieve constipation
-
Improve gastrointestinal conditions
CBD gummies are made from CBD oil. Unlike hemp seed oil, CBD oil comes from the leaves, flowers, and stalks of hemp plants and can be extracted through several methods, including CO2 extraction, solvent extraction, and steam distillation.

How Do I Know if My Hemp Product Is Legit?
With that in mind, you might be worried about purchasing a hemp product that doesn’t actually contain CBD and other hemp compounds like terpenes and flavonoids. The good news is that there’s a very simple way to make sure your product is legit.
As a rule of thumb, you should always ask for third-party testing results, or a Certificate of Analysis, for your CBD/hemp product. You can typically find this through a QR code on the packaging or the company’s website.
Third-party testing of CBD products ensures the purity, consistency, potency, and safety of the product. It provides unbiased test results for transparency and should be done by a lab that is completely unrelated to the company that it’s testing for.
This should test for things like cannabinoid and terpene profile, potency, pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, microbiological contaminants, and residual solvents.
If you purchased a full-spectrum CBD/hemp product, it should contain a range of cannabinoids, such as CBD, a small amount of THC, cannabichromene (CBC), cannabigerol (CBG), and cannabinol (CBN). It should also contain terpenes and flavonoids, though the report most likely will only show cannabinoid and terpene profiles.
If you purchased a broad-spectrum CBD/hemp product, it should contain a range of cannabinoids (and terpenes) similar to full-spectrum but should contain 0% THC. If you purchased an isolate CBD/hemp product, it should only contain CBD with no additional cannabinoids and no terpenes or flavonoids.
