Let’s be honest. Life is stressful, and now more than ever for so many of us. On top of navigating mental and physical challenges while stuck at home, our lives continue to be filled with to-do lists, overflowing email inboxes, and overdue reminders.
Luckily, there’s plenty we can do to relieve stress and promote body-mind wellness, like exercising, eating a healthy diet, spending time outdoors, meditating, or even taking cannabidiol (CBD).
From athletes to busy parents to your average Joe, many are turning to CBD and meditation to find their clarity and sense of calm. Here’s everything you need to know about CBD and meditation, including the potential benefits of each, how to incorporate CBD into your meditation practice, and other helpful meditation tip
Potential Benefits of CBD and Meditation
Meditation is an ancient practice, but it’s very much alive and well. In short, there are so many potential benefits of meditation. It’s incredible how such a simple act can have such an immensely positive impact. Meditation may reduce stress and anxiousness, promote a sense of calm and clarity, enhance focus and productivity, boost overall mood and happiness, and so much more.
CBD is well known for its potential to alleviate several common ailments, such as sleeping troubles, mild anxiety, and everyday aches and pains. These potential benefits are believed to come from CBD’s interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a network of receptors in the brain and body that support neuronal activity and plays an important role in the regulation of processes and functions, including sleep, mood, inflammatory response and pain, and memory.
CBD is often used prior to meditation, as it can help people to access a calm state of mind more easily and help deepen their meditation practice. On a regular day, CBD can strengthen and deepen your meditation practice. On the more stressful days, it can help ease you in when you’re having trouble focusing.
How To Include CBD in Your Meditation Practice
If you’re looking to add CBD and meditation into your mental health toolbox, there are a few things to keep in mind. First of which is how much CBD to take and the second is how to time your CBD consumption with your meditation practice.
When it comes to how much CBD you should take, this tends to vary from person to person as CBD is known to affect everyone differently. For providing a sense of calm and reducing mild anxiety, most people find relief between 10 to 60 mg of CBD. If you’re new to CBD, we recommend starting with 20 mg and incrementally increasing your dose until you’ve found your sweet spot.
The time it takes for CBD to “kick in” depends on how you take CBD because this affects how CBD is metabolized and processed in the body. In general, oral consumption of CBD (gummies, capsules, beverages, and other edibles) takes anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours to kick in. Sublingual consumption of CBD—accomplished by placing CBD oil under your tongue and holding it under your tongue for 30 seconds before swallowing—typically results in a quicker onset of effects, taking anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes to kick in.
So if you’re taking a CBD edible, it might take a bit of experimenting to get the timing right. You may start by taking your edible an hour or an hour and a half before your meditation practice. If you’re taking CBD oil sublingually, plan to take it 30 minutes before your practice.
Other Helpful Meditation Tips
Meditation is often misconstrued as the practice of emptying your head of all thoughts. The first time I tried meditation, I remember trying to push away every thought that came into my head, saying to myself, “think nothing, think nothing, think nothing” and feeling like I had “failed” at meditating because I wasn’t able to push these thoughts away.
The truth is, meditation is not necessarily about shutting down all the thoughts that come into your mind; meditation is really the practice of paying attention to the feelings and sensations that your mind and body are experiencing at that very moment and allowing these feelings to flow through you.
It’s about being present, observing, learning from your thoughts without judgment, and getting a healthy sense of perspective and grounding. Meditation not only works to improve your current mental state but also to increase your resiliency to future stresses. Once you remove the pressure and expectations, meditation becomes much easier.
Meditation can be daunting—but it doesn’t have to be. Aside from experimenting with CBD and meditation, here are some other helpful tips and tools to enhance your practice:
-
Choose a comfortable position: You don’t have to sit or lie any particular way during meditation. What matters is that you’re in a position that is comfortable and calming for you.
-
Consider heart openers: If you’re meditating while lying down, try placing a yoga block between your shoulder blades to lift your chest and allow your heart to open or let your arms rest in a “T” position with your palms up while on your back.
-
Set a time limit: If you’re new to CBD and meditation, you might consider setting a time limit for yourself. Even just five minutes of meditation can promote a sense of calm and relaxation.
-
Try a meditation app: Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned expert, apps, like Headspace, Calm, Happy Not Perfect, Insight Timer, and WAVE Meditation, are a great way to organize and guide your practice.
-
Meditate in the morning: If possible, try to meditate first thing in the morning to ensure you make it a priority and that it doesn’t get bumped off your to-do list. It’s also a great way to start the day and set yourself up for success.
